So unless you live under a rock you know The Republicans are trying to cut funding of Planned Parenthood. Well, this attack is not sitting well with the people in the capital district. Albany is the Capital of N.Y.. It especially is not in favor with the students of the University of Albany. In just one short week this rally was put together.
The Pro choice students and community members joined together to voice their support of Planned Parenthood. By my estimate there was over fifty people there, along with some media. The local Fox affiliate was they with camera in hand.

In talking with the students they expressed that Planned Parenthood is the one place students can go to get free or low cost health care, said Sara Mussachia,Suny Vox President.

University of Albany students, who are part of a Pro-choice group called Vox, reacted strongly to the announcement that congress had threatened to defund Planned Parenthood. Within a week on their Facebook page 100 people pledged to attend the rally.

Representatives from student groups including CATALYST and the young Democrats, community groups including Family Planning Advocates of NYS, Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson, New York Civil Liberties Union and interfaith Impact spoke at the event.

Representatives from both Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand were present and spoke. Local Congressman Paul Tonko was there an address the crowd. The congressman has long been an ardent supporter of Planned Parenthood and is Pro Choice.

UHPP President/CEO Patricia McGeown also spoke. In addition to the scheduled speakers, some from the crowd took the stand. They spoke of how Planned Parenthood was vital in their life. One was A high school student, another a college, while at least some were adults that had over the years used the services.
One such lady was my wife. Some 35 years ago it was a screening at Planned Parenthood that saved her life. She had early stages of cancer. They were her counselor, provider and confidant. Less than 3% of Planned Parenthood services have to do with abortions. None of these can take a dime from the Feds. It would against the law to do so. The Hyde Amendment insures this. It been in affect sine 1976. So the proposed cuts if passed would be detrimental to the ones you love. Women in general, who can’t afford to go anywhere else. They are seen to in a professional, confidential manner. It would seem to me, the opponents of Planned Parenthood should learn what they do and who it impacts.

I didn’t know that about Melissa. One more among the many thousands, tens of thousands of needed and wonderful things they do. Also good information re: the Hyde Amendment, in the sense I can use it in response to right wing accusations.

  2. Planned Parenthood
With apologies to Joyce Kilmer, author of Trees

I thought that I would never see
    A program sacred as P.P.

A program that Barack will back
    Against the GOP attack.

    A program Biden will defend
    Against the budget cutting trend.

A program for which Nancy fights
Beneath the flag of women’s rights.

A program for which Harry Reid
    Would shutter government indeed.

    When deficits begin to squeeze
    We see their true priorities.

While other programs come and go
This sacred cow must stay just so.

Very Nice! May I borrow it? I’m going to have it framed. If I’m correct it will galvanize hundreds more supporters. We may just put it up for viewing while killing babies. Kind of take our mind off of things. Better than the old days of passing out coat hangers, I’d say.

      What folly put forth
      This new round of bark
      Capturing of the moment
      with such sarcastic snark

      For some.. a sacred cow
      to others a helping hand
      problems don’t just go away
even with heads in the sand

The cow isn’t gone, so don’t look away
just a different pasture, more room to play
Seems a lot greener, the grass seems more full
but things aren’t so peaceful when corporate is the bull

Got an election, Koch voices were heard
But is it the populace, well that point got blurred
Easy to point out, this icon to destroy
But what is the plan, when hate is the ploy?

It’s wonderful to see / hear first hand resource for positive activism. I volunteered for PP when I was in college. They helped so many young women, their value has been understated for so long. Being threatened with the loss of it… hopefully brings people to their senses.

One of the things that amazed me was that it was put together in less than a week. So maybe 60 people were there. Really not many. In talking to the young ladies that started it, at the college there is no organized opposition. There are a few groups here and there on different street corners. Perhaps 2 to 3 people demonstrating. Be nice to keep it that way.

  5. Krell says:

The fact that any people showed up is encouraging. The public statement was made, people saw that, and some will listen enough to change their opinion to the positive.

Thanks Tim for your hard work. Good one! (and thanks Melissa)
